After more than 10 years on the Montreal scene, Stephen Beaupre has become a respected figure in the world of Canadian electronic music. Attracting early attention as part of Crackhaus, his duo with Deadbeat, Beaupré gained further recognition as a solo artist with his EP Dirty Lipreading on the upstart Montreal label Musique Risquée. 2006 brought the release of his first solo album, the masterful Foe Destroyer. Since then, Beaupré has released music on acclaimed labels such as Circus Company and Wagon Repair. His particular approach to music centers on lurching rhythms that build through micro-samples, exploring the emotional realms attempting consistently to flush out a deeper and richer relevancy within. In 2010, Beaupré turned to his more experimental side with Gemmiform, an ambitious audio-visual undertaking featuring the work of visual artists Nancy Belzile (experimental animation film), Patrick Bernatchez (drawing), David Fafard (digital imaging, video, VJ live performances) and the music of the Banjo Consorsium (guitar, banjo, lap steel). This inspired pairing with the Banjo Consorsium has grown into a handful of fledgling collaborations, one of which will debut at this year’s Mutek edition.
